Icon

The Prompt: This project explores the implications and opportunities to re-shore manufacturing through a lean manufacturing solution.

About Icon: With the rise of social media, trends are rapidly cycling. A customizable piece that is ethically made allows consumers to keep up with the trends without contributing to the fast fashion industry.

The Product: Icon is a customizable and ethically made clutch.

Lean Manufacturing: The main lean manufacturing method applied to this project is automated production. The cutting of the fabric and embroidery of the bag are all done by machine to increase efficiency and lower cost.

Why Icon?

The driving inspiration behind Icon is the poor conditions faced by garment workers in the fast fashion industry Fast fashion is on the rise as consumers want cheap, trendy products. They often buy and throw away quickly as trends pass. By automating production, Icon helps reduce the poor conditions faced by garment workers. Instead, these workers can control the machines and contribute to designs rather than having to work long hours in harmful conditions. Consumers can have a trendy piece that is also customized, making them less likely to throw away the bag.

Process: Part 1

This project was done over the course of 7 weeks. The first phase of the project was to research an automated production technology and visit a local business that used that production technology. I visited Trim World in Manhattan to do research on CNC embroidery.

Process: Part 2

The next phase of this project was the design. I started with sketching. Once I decided on the clutch design, I began the model. I casted the body of the model in resin. I then embroidered the fabric as well as two smaller samples to show different designs.
